Do I Really Need 10,000 Steps a Day?

  • How many steps do we need for health and longevity benefits?

  • Does intensity matter, or is it just about total steps?

  • Beyond how many steps we take, what role do other activity patterns play in overall health (like sitting less, strength training, and “weekend warrior” exercise)?

Amanda Paluch is a Associate Professor of Kinesiology at UMass Amherst. She is a physical activity epidemiologist and kinesiologist focused on advancing the measurement and promotion of physical activity. Her research includes developing wearable sensor technologies to monitor movement and health. As an epidemiologist, Amanda studies the associations of physical activity and chronic disease with an emphasis on advancing the science on daily steps as a public health metric. Her long-term goal is to reduce the burden of chronic disease and promote healthy aging through technology-assisted physical activity interventions that can be disseminated through clinicians and population-level efforts.
