Do I Really Need 10,000 Steps a Day?
How many steps do we need for health and longevity benefits?
Does intensity matter, or is it just about total steps?
Beyond how many steps we take, what role do other activity patterns play in overall health (like sitting less, strength training, and “weekend warrior” exercise)?
Amanda Paluch is a Associate Professor of Kinesiology at UMass Amherst. She is a physical activity epidemiologist and kinesiologist focused on advancing the measurement and promotion of physical activity. Her research includes developing wearable sensor technologies to monitor movement and health. As an epidemiologist, Amanda studies the associations of physical activity and chronic disease with an emphasis on advancing the science on daily steps as a public health metric. Her long-term goal is to reduce the burden of chronic disease and promote healthy aging through technology-assisted physical activity interventions that can be disseminated through clinicians and population-level efforts.

Volcanoes in Our Backyard: Insights into New England’s Geologic Past
Dr. Juliet Johnston is a Assistant Professor of Environmental Microbiology and Bioremediation at Hampshire College. She received her B.S. from Clemson University, and Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of Minnesota focusing on seasonal variations in wastewater microbial communities. While technically an environmental engineer, their primary focus is on leveraging microbial communities for biodegradation and bioremediation. She previously was a postdoctoral researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology focusing on the transcriptomic responses of nitrifying bacteria in wastewater. Before Georgia Tech, they were a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory with Dr. Mayali using microbial encapsulation techniques to explore how microbial communities behave in aggregates. Johnston has previously taught as a part-time lecturer at the University of California Berkeley and as an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas. She is excited to teach courses focusing on environmental microbiology, bioinformatics, environmental engineering, and general chemistry. Outside of lab, she can often be found on hikes, lounging in coffee shops, DIY crafting, and petting every nearby dog.

Volcanoes in Our Backyard: Insights into New England’s Geologic Past
Is Mt. Tom an old volcano?
When did volcanoes last erupt in New England?
What can volcanoes tell us about the interior of the Earth?
Sarah Mazza is an Assistant Professor of Geosciences at Smith College, and a hard-rock geologist who began her career at the University of North Carolina. Torn between furthering her education in topics of petrology or structural geology, she ended up at Virginia Tech to pursue a master’s degree under the supervision of Rick Law. While studying the thermal deformation of shear zones in Scotland and Nepal, Esteban Gazel approached her to join the “dark side” and descend into mantle geochemistry. Her doctorate focused on understanding non-plume-related intraplate volcanism by studying the youngest volcanoes of eastern North America (found in Virginia and West Virginia!) and the enigmatic volcanism of Bermuda. After completing her doctorate in 2016, Mazza joined a group of cosmo-chemists at the University of Münster (Germany) as a postdoctoral research scientist. While her colleagues were studying meteorites and planetary formation, she kept the research group “grounded,” investigating stable tungsten isotopic fractionation on Earth. Current and future research will include locations around the world with the broad goal of understanding the evolution of the Earth via volcanoes.
