A Bird Migration Spectacle in the Northeast:
Using Community Science to Understand Bird Migration and How We Can Protect Birds

  • How far do the birds we see in the Northeast migrate?

  • Why do some birds make such difficult migratory journeys (e.g., flying three days nonstop over the western Atlantic Ocean)?

  • What do birds do when they run into storms while they’re migrating?

  • What can I do to contribute to the science and conservation of migratory birds?

Professor Ted Gilliland is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Mount Holyoke College and a natural resource economist. His research focuses on natural resource management and conservation. To carry out this work, Ted combines theory and empirical techniques from economics, ecology, and natural history. He teaches courses in the economics department on environmental and natural resource economics and econometrics. In addition, Ted teaches a first-year seminar on bird migration and bird conservation, and is a member of the Massachusetts Avian Records Committee.
